We recommend leaving a distance equal to at least five times the DN size of the water meter between the main line and the meter. This means, for example, not fitting a hot water tee within 75 mm of a DN15 water meter. The safe distance from a DN20 water meter would be 100 mm. There is no issue with placing a ball valve, a dirt trap or an elbow right in front of the fitting, however. The safe distance is designed to ensure that meter readings are not affected by flow in the main line.
